Our Mission:

To Take Care of Coffee

(and much more)

The Essence
of Our Mission

We believe in caring for coffee beyond just enjoying its benefits. Unlike the industry’s norm of prioritizing profit, which leads to negative impacts like resource misuse and disconnect between producers and consumers, we focus on its longevity. Our mission is driven by a genuine love for coffee, aiming to protect and nurture it for future generations.

Innovating
for Sustainability

We address the coffee industry’s challenges—unsustainability, opacity, and lack of accountability—head-on. By integrating sustainable practices, such as eco-friendly cultivation and reducing waste, and promoting transparency and accountability, we’re not just roasting coffee; we’re ensuring it thrives responsibly. Opening direct lines of communication between producers and consumers is a key part of our approach.

Crafting a Future
Where Care Comes First

Our ultimate goal is to secure a thriving future for coffee that respects both the environment and the people it touches. By committing to sustainable, transparent, and accountable practices today, we aim to leave a legacy of a healthier coffee industry for tomorrow. This vision guides our actions and underlines our dedication to taking care of coffee.

MEET Stean

Stean Fasol is the founder of Stean's Beans. He started the brand in 2016; a tiny coffee roaster that he operated out of his apartment and managed deliveries on his bike.

Stean was born in Kenya and grew up between East Africa and South Africa. He completed his education in Amsterdam, creating Stean's Beans as a part of his graduation from Team Academy; a Dutch business school.

Stean started his brand with transparency and sustainability as the fundamental values on which he wanted it to grow.

I started Stean's Beans with the philosophy that education and transparency are key for making a change in the world. I have completed a number of industry-related courses over the past few years, in pursuit of better understanding every part of the coffee industry. I am proud to have obtained a 100 point certificate by the Specialty Coffee Association of Europe (SCAE). I am confident this will help me to further develop our company, share this valuable knowledge with our community.

STEAN IS CERTIFIED IN:

  • Barista Skills Professional - Brewing Professional
  • Green Coffee Professional - Sensory Skills Professional
  • Roasting Professional

MEET Harvey

Harvey began working with Stean's Beans in 2021. He manages branding and design. Despite being British, and therefore descended from a long line of proud tea drinkers, Harvey is a die-hard coffee fan and thus is now living in exile. Jokes aside, Harvey moved to Amsterdam to study Philosophy; in search of answers to some of the big questions of life. 'What is our purpose?' 'How should we live?' 'Are the prequels better than the original Star Wars trilogy?' 'Does pineapple belong on a pizza?'

This quest for truth comes with side quests, however, so whilst searching for answers Harvey also takes photos of coffee machines and designs things.

Despite working as a barista at a number of service establishments, Harvey's Latte art is more impressionist and interpretive than the industry standard, although he can do a pretty good tulip sometimes.

Harvey likes to write. In fact, he wrote this very text that you are reading, and honestly finds it quite bizarre to be writing satirically about himself in the third-person for the bio section of a coffee company, but it is his job. Usually though, Harvey likes to write about his lived experiences, his slow journey to Dutch proficiency, the conversations he has on trains and the plants growing on his balcony.

There is a little more space to fill so that this segment of text aligns with the goofy-ass photo of myself making a latte (writing in the first-person now, spooky huh?) so I am just going to insert a fun fact to amuse whoever made it to the end of this bio section and took the time to learn a little about us.

Did you know that "Stewardesses" is the longest word that is typed with only the left hand.

Seriously, try it now, kinda fun no?

Stewardesses.

MEET Hero

Hero began working with Stean's Beans in 2022. He manages our office space, inventory and delivers coffee around the city.

Hero is Dutch and was born and raised in Middenbeemster. He moved to Amsterdam because "that is what all the small town boys do; to make their dreams come true".

Upon questioning as to what dreams he is hoping to make a reality in Amsterdam, Hero declined to comment. However, he recently bought a boat and a very pretty guitar, so it's fair to say he is living the dream.

Hero is an excellent barista and has practiced his artistry in many cafes around Amsterdam. He also knows a lot about fixing coffee machines; so if you are having your machine fixed or attending one of our barista training sessions, you may well bump into him.

While I am typing this Hero is reminding me that his Girlfriend recently released a new single, so I figured this is a good place as any to give a shout-out to Féline Spiegel and to encourage whoever is reading to stream her new song 'Backyard' on Spotify.

MEET Maru

Maru first started out in the coffee industry in Sydney, where he lived for 6 years. His first Barista gig came about by chance, but after his first cafe manager introduced him to the world of specialty coffee, he was hooked and decided to commit his life to the almighty bean. From there, Maru’s quest for coffee mastery led him back to his home country of Japan, where he continued to work as a barista in Kyoto. From there he moved to Amsterdam, where he has worked his way through a variety of roles within coffee: barista, trainer, sales, and now roasting.

That is not all though, as Maru also happens to be very talented with using an Aeropress. In fact, Maru competes in Aeropress competitions (they are an actual thing, google it.) He placed second in the World Championship in 2021, and first in the Dutch Aeropress championship in 2022.

These days, you can find Maru roasting coffee in our roastery in Amsterdam or making coffee in our cafe. When he is not at work though, you would probably find him in a skate park somewhere in the city, because he is cool like that.

MEET John

Before John came to Amsterdam he was living and working on the island of Rhodes where he grew up. When he was 23, he took over the family business, a neighborhood cafe. From there he was hooked and by 2019 he became co-owner of the first specialty cafe on the island. After 3 years, he opened a second cafe with his business partner. However, with all his successes, it remained John’s dream to move abroad and work for the cause of making specialty coffee sustainable.

So in March of 2024 he went from small Island, to small city and moved to Amsterdam to pursue his goal. John began working with us in April and, with an impressive skill set covering just about everything to do with coffee, he now plays a crucial role on the production floor of our roastery and leads many of our barista training workshops.
